The man with the very large ears

The Panotti are a race of men with ears that cover their entire body. If this was a race of people what would cause evolution even over time to develop this? What could it be used for? Rabbits have long ears so they can hear long distances another is so they can cool their body easier. Do the Panotti need to cool themselves or are they in danger of something? So the Panotti could have used their large ears to either cool themeselves or maybe even put around them for warmth.
